Artist from October to November 7th :
Barbara VanDyke Shuman is a professional artist in the Seattle Area and a third generation
Northwesterner from Olympia. She received a Master's Degree in Art from University of
Washington and has spent three years abroad teaching in Turkey and China. She has studied
under Susan Bennerstrom, Pam Ingalls-Cox, Susan Ogilvie, Arnie Westerman, Bob Purser and
in Greece with the British Art Abroad group. In 2001 Barbara co-founded “The Painted Ladies”
art studio in Issaquah where she presently works. She is a sought after teacher and pastel-
demonstrator and has spent many years teaching wilderness plein-air painting workshops.
Barbara's work is collected nationally and she is represented by State of the Arts Gallery in
Olympia, Lakeshore Gallery in Kirkland, Blakely Gallery and Home Store in Seattle,
Earthenworks Gallery in LaConner. Barbara's work describes the chords and textures of the rural
landscape, the power and vastness of wilderness. All of her work reflects her passion for history,
world travel, and spirituality. She is married to Jim Shuman and has two grown sons, Brandon
and Jeremy, and a daughter, Melissa
